  1. I have been using the Current Industrial Report (CIR) data for my research. How does the CIR relate to the Economic Census or Annual Survey of Manufactures (ASM)?
  2.    The Current Industrial Reports are product specific surveys for certain industries and only ask for product level detail (10-digit NAICS Product Code). The ASM collects product class level data (7-digit NAICS) and will represent the aggregated sum of the product level detail previously reported from the CIRs. Starting with the 2012 Economic Census, you will be able to obtain most of the detailed product level data from the CIR Reports on the Economic Census. In the past, to minimize requesting duplicate data, the majority of these codes were kept off of the Economic Census since the detailed data could be obtained from the CIR Reports. The Economic Census and ASM also collect additional economic data such as number of employees, payroll, cost of materials, capital expenditures, assets, purchased services, and inventories.
