15. My company doesn't have any R&D activities. Do I still need to respond?

Yes. In order to have a complete picture of R&D in the business sector we need to know not only about the companies that have R&D, but also about those who don't. If your company does not have any R&D activities, you will only have to complete a small portion of the form.

16. My organization is a nonprofit. Do I still need to respond?

No. This survey covers only for-profit companies operating in the United States. Please note in the remarks section on the back page of the form that your organization is a nonprofit and return it to the Census Bureau.

17. My company is owned by another company. How should I respond?

If your company is owned by a non-U.S. (foreign) company, you should complete the form for your company, excluding data for your foreign owner and any other affiliated companies not owned by your company.

If your company is owned by a U.S. company, complete Section 1 of the form to determine whether you should respond to the rest of the form. If your company was purchased by a U.S. company before April 1, 2012 you will not be required to respond to the full survey. If your company was purchased between April 1, 2012 and December 31, 2012, you should follow the survey instructions and report for the period from January 1, 2012 to the date of purchase.

18. My company is no longer in business. How should I respond?

If your company ceased operations before April 1, 2012 you will not be required to respond to the full survey, just complete Section 1. If your company ceased operations between April 1, 2012 and December 31, 2012, you should follow the survey instructions and report for the period from January 1, 2012 to the date your company ceased operations.
